The Black Keys Music Video Production
Evaluation
1. Analyse your work, consider connotations, effects, genre, metanarrative, star image... Consider any of the theorist you have studied and apply implicitly to give your work depth. Include;
Specific camera Techniques
Editing - Cutting Rate, Illustrative ...
Mise en scene - costume, location, characters
Narrative/performance/concept - narrative fuzz
When looking at our section of this group music video, we
see that we have produced a narrative based response to the track. In addition
to this when using Goodwin we see that our music video is illustrative conforming
to the lyrics used “I’m a lonely boy”. As our music video was planned to be
narrative based, we focused on including certain camera angles such as close
ups, so that the audience will understand the characters feelings and emotions throughout
the video. Another point I would like to raise is that the cutting rate for
this track is at a medium rate, typically conforming to an alternative style of
music video. All our characters in this production are young; yet do not
imitate the rebellious ideology that is held within society about young people.
Our production demonstrates more of a ‘teenage love scenario’; on the other
hand this is still a weld held ideology concerning young people about their dramatic
crushes on other students. This is typically demonstrated in American High
School movies, and is also shown in The Black Keys music video ‘Tighten Up’.
Due to our theme of our sections of the music video, our props were typical
classroom objects, and then regarding costume traditional teaching robes were
used to allow our teacher character to fulfil the role she was playing, and the
students dressed in school uniform.
2. How did you develop your skills during this exercise? What advice would you give your self for this music video task? What ideas do you currently have?
I believe that through completing this music video we were
able to identify certain aspects which are in need of more thought when
completing our real music video. For example, the use of the mood board in our
production was crucial in having an idea about the timing of the track and the
lyrics in comparison to the visuals that were being played. Therefore for
timing purposes, we must dedicate a lot of time to the story board when it
comes down to our real production. As far as developing my own personal skills
go, I think that I am able to analysis music videos now with greater depth, and
using this knowledge to consider certain possibilities about how we should
construct our own music video in relation to the genre and beat of the track we
plan to make our music video to. Concerning the development of my own ideas I initially
thought that a more compilation styles music video would be more successful due
to the genre we have chosen (dance), yet after listening to our track over the
top of Narrative based video, I believe that undertaking a more narrative
approach to our music video may be more successful. However I still do believe that
for the track to be compatible to its genre we should allow room for
compilation work, slow motion edits, time lapse’s, and colour edits over the
top that would enhance our music video.
